Those of you who know me know that my passion is in newborn imagery. I love bellies and babies – I love showcasing the sweet little angels and their loving connection to their parents. I love everything about it.

This is certainly no exception.  This angel did NOT want to sleep, but after much coaxing and cooing, she did.  And what an angel she is.  We photographed this in their home in Delaware – beautifully decorated and the nursery was AMAZING!  The whole session took on a bit of a vintage feel with the lighting and quiet nature to the images… I love it all so much.

Man… I had forgotten how much I missed photographing the anticipation of new life.  Seriously, it’s the most beautiful thing in my job. I love the form, I love the glowing looks, and I even love the fact that every single expectant mother tells me, “I’m not photogenic”.  It’s such a pleasure for me to take a woman who truly thinks that the shape of her belly is obtrusive and unattractive and show her that it’s the most artistically beautiful thing in her life… until that baby arrives anyway.

We shot in my old stomping grounds of Historic New Castle Delaware on a ridiculously foggy morning.  I had a great time with this awesome couple and I truly cannot wait to meet the baby this winter!

It’s not often these days that I get a call to photograph a high school senior, but when I do – I LOVE IT! The day was simply gorgeous. The location was Lake Scranton. The mom is an artist as well. The girl was sweet, beautiful and fierce. {seriously… think ANTM fierce}.

I can’t pick a single favorite – or even just 10 favorites – so here are a selection of the ones I love. <3

And finally, of every picture I took that day, this one is the one… that one shot from a hundred that is real and relaxed and a perfect reflection of this beautiful girl.

Ok – so I’m going to address one of my favorite things in photography.  BLUR.  A lot of photographers will call it “emotionally in focus” when an image that they love isn’t tack sharp, but the emotion behind it still comes through loud and clear.  I happen to LOVE images like this – that have the most amazing blur, paired with the most amazing sentiment.

All too often I hear the parents I work with say that they refuse to print images that are blurry or slightly out of focus or not cropped properly. I say embrace the blur! Learn to use it!

I wanted to share some of my own favorites of my daughter Noelle. She is 100% the living representative of “wild child”. lol… she has such a free spirit – such a fire about her, and I always feel a little bit weird taking the posed pictures of her.  She’s beautiful no matter what, but she is exquisite when she’s just being herself – wild, carefree and little miss sassy pants.  :)  My heart melts when I see images like this of her because I feel like I really, truly captured HER.

A lot of blur? absolutely.  But this, my friends, is Noelle.

I am not traditional.  AT ALL.  I can appreciate the look of fine tradition, and occasionally I will even work a very traditional piece into my decor.  But I consider myself to be more “transitional” – a mix between traditional, vintage, modern and eclectic.  :)  I live on the east coast and in such a location, everyone seems to be traditional in their decorating style. When a client tells me what they are going to do with their pictures, I always hear something like, “we’re going to hang a big one over the fireplace”, or “I was thinking of 3 framed in a row down our hallway”, or “just one 11×14 matted in a big frame for our living room. We don’t want to be too full of ourselves, right?”   And while that is all beautiful and the perfect sentiment, I would like to challenge you to take a step back and think about trying something that will make a statement.   Simple is great  most of the time, but in the land of traditional, colonial houses with dark wood furniture, granite countertops, soaring ceilings and white trim – simple can sometimes get lost in the shuffle and be a bit blah.

This post is all about making that statement with your pictures.  Don’t worry about being too pretentious or showy – it’s your house!! It matters most what YOU want to see when you walk around, not what others will think when they walk in the door.  The thing that I always make sure I do when I decorate my home is to ensure that I’m decorating it for ME.  It’s not for anyone else.  It’s filled with all of the things I love to look at, touch, smell.  It’s MY home.  People visit me, and while they might not love my decorating style, they always say this, “It’s you.”   That is the greatest compliment anyone can give me.  That I’ve successfully made my home an accurate reflection of me and my family.

When I walk into most of these traditional, colonial homes, I rarely get a sense of who the person is.  I always walk away wondering what their favorite color is (because surely 80% of the population cannot have beige, brown and white as their favorite color!), or if they actually sit on that perfect sofa and watch tv at night, because it looks too “perfect” to use.  Do they actually use that table for dinner?  Or do they eat over the sink so no crumbs fall on the floor?  I can’t tell!

My home, while quirky, is clean and lived in.  We have comfortable furniture (stylish, too), and fluffy pillows. We have scratched up tables because we USE them.  Our beds are crumpled, but made – and awesome to fall into.  I am always tickled when someone walks into my house and instantly flops themselves onto my sofa, kicks their feet up and asks me if I have a beer.  THAT is my greatest goal when it comes to my house.  That someone can instantly feel like they won’t ruin anything, can eat anywhere and just be at home.

Wall displays of your pictures can make a statement in your traditional homes. But they can also help to tone down that “stiff” feeling that comes along with todays new construction.  Take a look at these pictures, and try to imagine what your visitors might feel like if they actually got a sense of who you were when they walked in and saw something like this:

My challenge to you is this:  walk around your house and pick just one wall that you see every single day.   How can you use that wall to showcase who you are?  What will make you happy?  Then, just do it.  It’s a wall.  If you hate it, there is this wonderful product called Spackle and you can start over again.  That’s the beauty of it! There is no risk, but there is insane joy to be had if you get it right.

So, construction has begun!  sort of… I’m reconstructing my business finally to make it work up here in North East Pennsylvania and it’s been a ton of fun!  New website coming, new business cards, and a whole new studio space.  My husband might want to sell me after this is all said and done, but I know it will be worth all of the effort!  I’m hoping again to focus on the bellies and babies here in NEPA and so I’m starting there.  speaking of newborns…

I love it so much when my clients come back to me year after year… or in this case – kid after kid after kid!  This little one is #3 and a girl!! After two rough and tumble – always jumping and making a mess  - boys, I know this mom and dad are happily welcoming this beautiful little angel in all of her quiet sweetness.  She did not wake up even ONCE during our session – I never heard her cry!!

It is sessions like this that reinforce my love of the bitty babies.  I love documenting this stage of life… this phase of love.  There’s nothing like it.

I am a mom to two girls.  They love pink. They wear dresses. They rarely intentionally get dirty or have the desire to explore unchartered territory for fear of ruining their perfectly manicured toes.  They do enjoy the occasional fishing trip with grandpa and will even hold a wet fish for all of 3.4 seconds so mom can snap a picture.  I love my girls.  I love their cleanliness and I love that they aren’t boys.  Having said that…..

I get so jealous when I have a client show up to a session with an adorable little boy!!!  I know that watching a 2 year old boy run around, explore, get dirty, refuse to sit still and just embrace his “boyhood” is completely frustrating to the parents … but to me, it’s awesome.  I love watching it and being there to document it because I so rarely see it in my own home.  I adore these little guys so much, and this one in particular because I’ve been shooting him since he was a week old.  It doesn’t get much better than that when you want to live vicariously through these families who are lucky enough to have boys.

You’ve seen this little guy “R” here before, and God willing – if his mother doesn’t sell him first – you’ll see him here again, hopefully.

Since we moved to West Pittston, I’m trying to find my blogging schedule again…  I get all twisted into the summer schedule of my kids, and the work, and the vacations… it’s all so crazy!  Lately, I’ve found a bit of time to sit and read a book or two, and I got absolutely sucked into one of the best books I’ve read in a while.  It’s a book by Concetta Bertoldi called “Do Dead People Watch You Shower?” and while it’s probably controversial in the eyes of most people, it was enlightening and completely eye opening for me.  I have very strong beliefs, and this book was the perfect spark of growth for the spiritual side of me.  I highly recommend it – if you have an open mind, and an open heart – you should read it.

But, I digress…  It’s been a few weeks at least since this session, but I just have to share it now.   This little girl holds a special place in my heart, and every time I get to see her, I am filled with total awe at how awesome she is.  Well, now she has an equally amazing little brother, and I was lucky enough to get to photograph them together this summer.

    Like any toddler – I spent a lot of time chasing and clicking, but in the end my legs were a little more toned and the images were an exact documentation of this beautiful little girl and her spunky personality.  {love that}

Moving to north east Pennsylvania has had it’s definite upside.  Old houses, an abundance of vintage EVERYTHING, good food, great weather and all the family a girl could ask for.  One of my favorite things happening right now is my house.  It’s being painted (before/after pics once it’s done!) and I’m slowly watching this transformation happen and planning my porch.  My front porch is my little sanctuary. It’s L shaped, and fabulous in it’s southern charm.  Wood lined ceiling, porch swing, soft pillows, good lighting… it’s all there and ripe for the decorating.  I swear to you that the moment that last drop of paint is dry, this girl with a southern heart will be out there fluffing, primping and prepping my daily coffee sanctuary.

I found this on one of my favorite blogs today – Gypsy Purple Home – and fell in love. It’s my color – purple  - and the ambiance and FEEL of this is just sigh worthy.  I am so in love and will be on the hunt for an old metal can or two that I can paint this weekend.  :)

So, on this cool Pa morning, I’m curious – Where’s your sweet spot?  What part of your space do you look at, sigh and sink into?

Anyone who knows me knows that I adore all things vintage and creative.  My house would be a tribute to Martha Stewart if I wasn’t married to a “by the books and in the lines” engineer.  :)  This is just one of those fabulous things that I love – using every day common things in an uncommon way.  LOVE that.

I found this on Pinterest – there’s no original link as to where on the vast world of the internet it came from, but I thought I’d share anyway.  Quilting rings with awesome fabric.  How awesome is this?!?
